With the cold front moving through last night, a little rain and the winds eventually coming from the northwest I had hopes of catching up with some migrant shorebirds this morning at Arcadia.   I arrived early and found the following six species of shorebirds: a Greater Yellowlegs, four Lesser Yellowlegs, two Solitary Sandpipers, a Spotted Sandpiper, 19 Least Sandpipers and a couple Killdeer.  Nothing really new there as far as species composition goes.  I really hoped to find something unusual this morning but no luck.  At least this morning featured clearer conditions without the thick fog of a handful of previous visits earlier in the week.  I’m sure the next few nights with northerly winds will bring in new migrants.

Yesterday I had a male Northern Parula along the rail trial in Amherst at first light but other than that species, nothing too unusual.  In addition the migration of Common Nighthawks continues to pick up with at least 42 over the house last evening, most quite high feeding.
