A Short eared Owl found by a couple of out of state birders looking for the rumoured to exist Gyrfalcon found a very real Short eared Owl this morning at the Honeypot in Hadley.  The bird stayed in the same general area all day and allowed many local birders to see it.  It began hunting at dusk with some success.  A quite unusual species in the Connecticut Valley.  The last one I had was a few years ago in the same area in October.

Although the Gyrfalcon and the Long eared Owl were no shows today there were yet again great birds around, in addition to the above mentioned Short eared Owl.  The Vesper and Clay colored Sparrow on Aqua Vitae Road continued, a Merlin, an American Kestrel, Red shouldered Hawk and Northern Harrier were at the Honeypot and a Great Blue Heron made a few appearances.  As usual there were good numbers of Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Common Redpolls around.
