Black headed Gull, Meadow Street Fields, Amherst/Hadley, MA, Mar 13, 2013 |
I was able to catch up with two rare birds (Greater White fronted Goose and Black headed Gull) late this afternoon in flooded fields on the Hadley/Amherst line off Meadow Street. The Black-headed Gull is quite unusual inland with only a handful of records. The gull was found yesterday by Ian Davies and it was still around today among the many gulls, geese and other waterfowl. The Greater White fronted Geese were found earlier today by Bob Bieda as he searched unsuccessfully for the gull. There were at least two Greater White fronted Geese in among the 2000+ Canada Geese. Other birds of note here included three Northern Pintails. The area looks prime to attract even more rare or unusual birds over the next few weeks. I was able to add two species to my Hampshire county list for the year with the Black headed Gull becoming
#98 and the Greater White fronted Geese
#99. What will number 100 be? Who knows?
