The next two mornings  (December 6 and 7) were spent at Hacienda Baru on the pacific coast, about an hour away from the lodge.  The first day we both went down to Hacienda Baru spending some time in the jungle as well as along the beach.  The temperatures down here were certainly warmer than back at the lodge with the mercury quickly rising into the 80’s by mid morning.  It was tough to be in the sun but just by stepping into the shade the temperature was perfect.

On December 7th I left the lodge at 4:30am to make it down to Hacienda Baru for a 5:30 start time for a guided lowland birding tour.  The tour started out in the parking lot where we added many species that flew over or fed in the trees around the area. The guide, one other person and myself then went on a morning long tour of the area.  It was another great morning here with many lowland species added to the trip list.  We had a total of 75 species throughout the morning with many great looks.  A late morning stop for breakfast in a clearing added several species as various raptors flew overhead.  Beyond the birds there was a great selection of mammals including both two and three toed sloths and three groups of White-faced Capuchin Monkeys.
