Winsor Dam, Quabbin Park, Nov 23, 2013 |
I spent the first part of the morning hitting a few areas at Quabbin Park again in search of waterfowl. Although the forecast called for strong winds out of the west and northwest the winds were not too bad and varied from southwest to northwest at least through 9am. Without a really strong push of northwest winds I didn't expect to get an influx of anything unusual but it was worth checking to make sure. Waterfowl numbers and variety were quite low with the following found: Half a dozen Black Ducks, four flyby Canada Geese, half a dozen Hooded Mergansers, a Red breasted Merganser close in at Winsor Dam, half a dozen Common Loons and seven Horned Grebes. Other species of note included at least five Bald Eagles, three Snow Buntings and 70+ American Goldfinches moving southwest in groups. Tried to find a Snowy Owl sitting on one of the exposed shorelines but no luck.
Tonight will feature another cold front and tomorrow will be like mid winter with highs staying in the 20's with a strong northerly winds and lows tomorrow night in the single numbers...ouch!

Winsor Dam in low clouds and fog, Quabbin Park, Nov 22, 2013 |
Yesterday turned out to be foggy with occasional rain and temperatures
in the upper 40's. Hardly a nice day but probably the warmest over the next
several as another blast of cold air moves in. Made a few stops early morning including Winsor Dam which held a Common Loon and hundreds of gulls in the air but most too far away to identify but most likely Ring billed Gulls. A stop at Hadley
Cove produced 118 Mallards, eight Black Ducks and just over a hundred Canada
Geese but nothing unusual. A stop at Winsor Dam later in the day found the area
quite foggy but I could still see a bit of the water which turned up a Common Loon
plus another smaller loon way out that was somewhat obscured by the fog. It
appeared smaller than a Common Loon with a smaller head and bill which gave it a
somewhat longer necked appearance. I tried to get some digiscoped shots but the
distance and fog led to less than desired results. It could have been something
unusual or just an odd appearing Common Loon with details lost due to
distance. A few other stops a bit later did not produce the unidentified loon again but it could have just been too far out to see.
