Brief stop at Quabbin Park

Horned Grebe, Quabbin Park, Nov 6, 2013
Common Loon, Quabbin Park, Nov 6, 2013
With a little time before work I stopped by Quabbin Park to see what I could find.  There were a few species of waterfowl around including a cool dozen Common Loons, five Horned Grebes, a Long tailed Duck, nine Common Mergansers, four Hooded Mergansers, a Wood Duck, 15 Black Ducks and a few Mallards.  Tried my luck once again to catch up with anything unusual at Winsor Dam but all I found during a quick walk there were a few Snow Buntings.
More southerly winds today and tomorrow give us another chance for vagrant birds to be blown into the area before a cold front moves through during the afternoon tomorrow.  Yet again the big target would be Cave Swallow.  Only a few reports of the species came in with the last bout of southerly winds.  Perhaps this  time more of them will show up.  Again, much more likely to appear on the coast but the chances are always there of one making its way through western Massachusetts.  Other species are certainly possible and could turn up anywhere.
