The last couple of days have featured strong southerly winds with temperatures in the 60's and 70's (near record setting warmth) and the forecast shows near record cold and the chance for snow by the end of the weekend into next week....very changeable weather to be sure (glad I won't be here to see the snow!).  Occasionally rain showers overnight combined with decent migration conditions held the possibility for some birds to be grounded by the weather but I didn't have any luck finding any.  I made a few stops including Quabbin Park, Beaver Lake, Lake Wallace and Covey WMA.  A total of 53 species for the morning including nine species of waterfowl. Certainly a noticeable increase in Eastern Phoebes, kinglets, Pine Warblers and Swamp Sparrows (plus others).  No luck turning up any marsh birds but the winds made listening tough at times.
Vesper Sparrow, Belchertown, MA, Apr 1, 2016
Late in the morning as I was getting ready to take Wilson for a walk I got a call from Devin saying he had a Vesper Sparrow in his backyard (a very unusual spot for this species).  I made a quick drive over and managed to get a brief view and fire off a couple distant shots before the bird disappeared.  We waited awhile for it to return but no luck.  The Vesper Sparrow became species #113.
