It once again appeared to be a good day to check for waterfowl along the Connecticut River as I had a nice selection of species during a brief stop at the North Lane Conservation Area in Hadley which included five Canada Geese, a Wood Duck, eight Mallards, a dozen Ring necked Ducks, six Greater Scaup, 13 Hooded Mergansers and a Red necked Grebe.  I really wish I had more time to check out more areas as I’m certain the rest of the river was just as active…oh well.  I guess I will have to wait a few days.  The river continues to be about the only open water for waterfowl to use at this point so the concentrations of birds is quite impressive.  The rain turning to snow tonight with cold temperatures the next few days should keep the birds from moving much further north.  Luckily we will miss out on a massive snow storm that will be occurring in more northerly locations where two feet or more of snow will fall.
