Common Gallinule, Lake Wallace, Belchertown, MA, June 12, 2015
I got out a little before work each day this week as well as today and checked mainly the same areas at about the same time. Always interesting to see the changes from day to day at the same locations.
This morning I had the day off so I hit a wider variety of local spots including Lake Wallace, Quabbin Park and a few other locations in Belchertown. Highlights included the continued presence of a couple of rarities...Common Gallinule and White eyed Vireo. The gallinule(s) have been around for at least a week now and the White eyed Vireo for over three weeks (thought it had left as I did not hear or see it for the first 45 minutes I was there in the area but then it started calling again). Lots of other good stuff including a Virginia Rail walking along Route 9 at the marsh near Quabbin and loads of birds carrying food to nests and a number of fledglings around.

I made an early stop over to Lake Wallace Thursday morning before dawn and caught up with the Common Gallinule which showed itself briefly a few times but mainly stayed hidden with an occasional vocalization. There may have been two individuals but I could not confirm it today.

In addition I had a couple of Common Nighthawks flying over downtown Northampton around 8:30pm with lots of vocalizations.  Perhaps they will return to breed once again on one of the roofs downtown?

Hooded Merganser, Lake Wallace, Belchertown, MA, June 10, 2015
On Wednesday morning I made a few stops including Lake Wallace and Moody Bridge Road in Hadley to check out the vulture roost. Lake Wallace featured at least one Common Gallinule calling from the marsh and other expected species. A total of 32 Turkey Vultures at the roost but no sign of any Black Vultures.

Tuesday morning the skies looked a bit threatening which eventually resulted in some rain but before the rain arrived I made a brief stop at Winsor Dam (highlight being four Common Mergansers) and then over to Lake Wallace where I once again heard the Common Gallinule calling from the marsh. I hoped to make a stop at Hop Brook in Amherst but the rain started so instead I checked out the vulture roost and had a dozen Turkey Vultures.

On Monday morning I made a stop by Lake Wallace and despite the windy conditions I managed to hear a Common Gallinule call just a couple of times before I headed out to work. Also made a brief stop along Moody Bridge Road in Hadley to check out the vulture roost and found two Black Vultures mixed in with a dozen Turkey Vultures.
