February ends on a slightly warmer note

The winter seems to have lost a bit of its grip with temps that actually made it into the 40's and the ice and snow is very slowly disappearing while we were gone to Arizona for a short trip.  The biggest draw the last couple days has been waterfowl in the only bit of open water at Quabbin and the congregation of Bald Eagles at another deer carcass on the ice at Winsor Dam.  I have had up ten species of waterfowl with the highlights being Lesser Scaup and Common Loons.  The number of Bald Eagles peaked at 21 individuals (including one sitting on a nest) and despite checking multiple times I have not yet turned up a Golden Eagle.  Other notables I have had to end February include American Pipit, Northern Shrike and Red Crossbill.
