I decided to spend the last nice weather day making a trip over to Northampton to follow up on a Red headed Woodpecker that has been seen over the last several days (at least). It was a fairly cold start (teens) but with no wind it didn't feel too bad at all. I arrived at first light and made a fairly short walk into the area where the bird has been seen (thanks to Janice, Marcia and Sara for details). The bird showed briefly a bit after seven and then disappeared and was not seen again until a bit after eight and showed much better at that point. It appears to be settling in for the winter and is stashing acorns. It is great to see Red headed Woodpeckers becoming a bit more common in the last few years in the local area. Besides the woodpecker I had a few other notables while I explored the area including flyover Pine Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls. I checked a few other areas after leaving the woodpecker scouting areas for the rapidly approaching new year and targets to see in the first few days of the new year.
