Although below freezing this morning it was fog free (unlike yesterday) and relatively calm at Quabbin. I made a brief stop at Winsor Dam and had no waterfowl at all but did have a large group (275+) of gulls out near Gate 5. I decided to make the short trip over to Gate 5 to see what I could view from there. The gulls had mostly vacated the area by the time I made it down to the water’s edge but the rapidly approaching sunrise made for some great views out across the reservoir. After a few scans of the water I finally found some waterfowl when three Black Scoters popped into view. Other notable birds on the walk down to the water included a Ruffed Grouse, two Hermit Thrush and a group of around a dozen Pine Siskins. The forecast tonight calls for rain changing to snow and accumulating an inch or two with the winds increasing out of the northwest and temperatures struggling to reach 40 tomorrow…it will certainly look (and feel) a lot more like winter tomorrow.  Perhaps the cold winds will bring in some decent birds?

  1. This morning brought some really good birds for us. Such as a OVEN(Very late) and a NSWO(Lifer)http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S20534962. It was a really great morning for birds.
